Muon detector systems

Complete system

Our muon counters are delivered as a system, complete with all hardware and software. They are quick to set up and easy to use.

One-paddle system

This lowest-cost system will detect cosmic muons, display photomultiplier pulses, measure muon arrival times and even observe muon decay and measure the muon life time accurately.

One-paddle system components Its muon detector consists of a 10" by 8", 1-inch thick scintillator paddle with a solidly integrated 2-inch PMT inside a magnetic shield and protective housing.

For highest safety, the PMT is powered by a plug-on HV supply (TwinBase). There is no high-voltage carrying cable in this sytem.

All data acquisition is accomplished by a tiny eMorpho unit (2" x 2"). It connects to a PC or laptop via a single USB cable. The PC controls and powers the eMorpho, and the eMorpho controls and powers the TwinBase.

Two-paddle system

One-paddle system components This full-featured system can measure the direction- dependency of the cosmic muon flux by recognizing the coincidence between two paddles.

Its components are those of a one-paddle system plus an X-ADC card which is used to convert the single-channel eMorpho into a two-channel data acqusition and signal processing unit.

Its software reports singles and coincidence rates, display singles and coincident photomultiplier pulses on screen and creates and shows pulse height spectra.

Selection Guide

Single paddle system

  • Lowest cost
  • Measures muon count rate
  • Detects stopped muons and measures muon life time

Two-paddle system

  • Measure muons as singles or in coincidence
  • Measures singles and coincident count rates
  • Use to determine direction-dependent cosmic muon flux
  • Detects stopped muons and measures muon life time
